The Antigonish Highland Society was formed in 1861 but did not host the first games until 1863. One of the most remarkable sights of the games is on continuous display throughout the year. At various locations around the town, great tree sculptures have been carved out of ancient trees by chain saw.

We first discovered these beautiful carvings right outside our motel. Here a highlander stands clutching a great claymore blade, weary as if at the end of battle. The double handed legendary Scottish sword, the Claymore was over 55" in length and dates back to the 13th century. It required enormous strength to wield in battle.

One of the most ancient of Highland games events and one of the most distinctive is the tossing of the caber, represented by this figure at the edge of the Antigonish Fair Grounds. These feats of strength seem almost to defy the very laws of gravity. Other Scottish Heavy Events at most Highland Games also consist of the stone throw, 28lb. weight throw, 16lb. hammer throw, 56lb. weight toss and the sheaf toss.

But it's the pipes that truly define the games and beckon the traveler from miles around. Their plaintive cry stirs the very soul of Scot and Outlander alike.
